The HOULDEN report  For February 11,2018

Well here it is folks. The time where I am feeling like I have seen enough of technology.Where the computer that was once seen as a fantastic Help mate, turned into a gargantuan monster that takes control of your very being.I long for those days when a person can work a few hours on whatever project they have on the computer, save it to disk and not have to have pressure to save it online in "the cloud" . I am finding technology to become intrusive.Everything you think,do and say,is in the internet. The song "In the year 2525" By Zaeger and Evans says it out plainly. "Everything you think, say or do is in the pill you took today" and " pic your sons, pick your daughters too, from the bottom of a long glass tube, whoa whoa".. That was from a song from back in 1968.They were not that far from hitting it on the spot. They mention that there is nothing left to do because some machine is doing that for you... and so on.

Issac Asminov also was correct too. That the possibilities of time travel via a machine, indeed can happen if we let it. Smart Phones? Let's see.. The "Smart Phone" a device that really is supposed to do what you want to do beit Facebook, chatting, gaming, emails, correspondence with others on projects, etc. Has been the very device that not only takes forever to load, you now have to worry that all of your contacts are safe from hackers,You also have to have apps that clean your phone (which takes up resources) and securely guards you against hacks.Apple recently admitted that they sent out an update for all their iDevices that would slow down older equipment on purpose so the owner/user would have to purchase a new iDevice from Apple. This is one unscrupulously notorious tactic they use in order to get folks to purchase yet even more devices from Apple. They do this all in the good name of progress and safety. Oddly,I call this bullshit.

Android OS (a Linux product owned by google) was designed originally to be faster, more flexible and free (so they think). Instead,it is proven that the more apps you add to android, the slower it gets and the more bugs are found.Google fools folks into believing that even their operating system is faster then the other guy's. Fact remains that what actually makes Google faster,is this fact.. The whole operating system is merely in their servers and not on your laptop or desktop. The choices that the user actually has,are getting to be fewer and fewer with each passing year. That shiny new gadget you just purchased at the retail outlet for an exorbitant amount of cash is merely a shell.A piece of total crap.A Brainless machine and can do nothing until you go online and sign in to finish up your project for work so the boss wont gripe.

Microsoft is also guilty as sin as well. They impede on your privacy in a huge extent. If you purchase a "Window$ Machine",you only own the computer or device and not the software. They are also guilty of Bloating things so it runs slower then a broken snow thrower in the dead of winter. All versions of windows after windows 7 have turned out to be Pure crap. You risk security all in the name of convenience. If they do not know where you are or what you are doing, they assume you are either a hacker or a terrorist or even... a HACKTIVIST! This really does get my goat here. This grabs me good because I still do believe that a person's privacy is top priority. The only thing that keeps my older windows machines going,is the common sense I use by keeping them offline. If they need updates,I gather them up on my Linux machine manually and then port them over to them as needed.Aside from that, they remain offline. It Isn't that the internet would kill them,it's because Microsoft will kill them off and then fix them so they will have to "Call home" every time i turn them on. And when they "Call Home",they give out all of your personal data to their servers and then, the thought of the security they give that data,is a mere afterthought.Apple is also Guilty here too folks.
Amazon and Google too have their ways of gaining your Data.Look at the amazon echo dot and Alexa and then google's answer to the Alexa.
Folks are letting these devices control their lives.Their homes are filled with these devices, their Cars are equipped with a onboard computer that uses both amazon, google,Microsoft windows, and apple iOs.
Now,with all of this gadgetry impeding in our lives, we now deal with texting, sexting, texting while driving, cybering, etc. It is now so bad that it is illegal to drive and text at the same time. Families now have to set aside gadgets at the supper tables just to get back to being families again. And for what? The Mighty smart phone, tablet,PC,online chats, and all of that bullshit.

People have indeed lost a sense of themselves with the advent of the computer age and the internet.Instead of being connected with only the family and real life friends, they connect via Facebook or many other sites that are on the net.In the 60s,Timothy Leary wrote " Turn On,Tune in,Drop Out" . to define what he meant is this...
"Turn on, tune in, drop out" is a counterculture-era phrase popularized by Timothy Leary in 1966. In 1967 Leary spoke at the Human Be-In, a gathering of 30,000 hippies in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and phrased the famous words, "Turn on, tune in, drop out". It was also the title of his spoken word album recorded in 1966. On this lengthy album one can hear Leary speaking in a monotone, soft-spoken voice on his views about the world and humanity and describing nature, Indian symbols, "the meaning of inner life", the LSD experience, peace and many other issues.

I say this.. As far as computers and Devices,Turn off, tune out,and tune in to the people around you. It seems the more folks who turned their devices on and connected online, instantly ceased to tune in with the people around them which in turn circumvents society. This Anti-Social behavior is worry-some at best.Folks have become a servant to the computer. This troubles me alot about the human condition.Big companies like Microsoft,Apple,Amazon and Google all know that Humanity has become the puppets of the machines they invented and what better way to harness humanity into their grips then to let them all interact with each other on the computer and not as a society as a whole. They hate individualism unless they have plenty to gain from it.In the 80s,Apple's slogan was "Think Different".Steve Job's meaning of thinking outside of the Box.Well it seems Apple built the BOX that everyone is thinking in.Another Item I find alarming is this... Cell phones are the biggest threat to privacy.Allow me to explain before you go off on a wild tangent on me. The Cell Phone has a tracker device built in.The GPS uses satellites and cell towers to get your locale even when you turn it off.It Tracks your position between cell towers and maps your location right down (thanks to google) to your home address number and street. This also occurs when the cell phone is Off. They Claim it is for your safety and to assist emergency agencies in locating you or your family in an emergency. The only way to circumvent this activity,is to take your battery out so it cannot power up the location services on your cell phone.Your ISP also tracks your activities online as well. The only way to bypass this is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). TOR was somewhat safe but,we did forget that in the early nineties that the Government created TOR for the armed services. The Fact that the NSA also Hacked TOR is another item to consider as well.Another item that upsets me is this..The NSA,an government agency who has been created for decades for the sole purpose of gaining information regarding terrorism, has been allowed repeatedly,to track everyone, everything, all the devices in your home, your car, your phone calls, who you talked to,your online activities, and strip away your privacy.Even to destroy a product they themselves created for use over the net to get data from one place to another without the enemy knowing it;just to gain what they call "Intel" on their targets.Meanwhile Your Privacy remains diminished.

This sounds like a nightmare (and trust me,it really is). Your rights and Your freedoms have become a commodity to be bought and sold to the highest bidder.

I can say this.I do not wish any harm to those who work for the NSA or any government agency.I only feel that the present policies for each agency needs to consider the individual privacies of each citizen and each citizen should keep in mind what I mentioned in this report. I also can only hope that Microsoft and Apple could get their heads out of their backsides and know that it is the people they railroad to get their products, buy their products and the companies should respect their users.Without their users, they would have no companies.

I also hope that the open source community and Linux users can continue to make the operating system safe and secure so that the user can rest assured that they will be able to have a safe environment to work in.It is the open source community that makes computing worthwhile. The ideals are still alive.Free to think,Free to do,Free to distribute, and free to CREATE. And Lastly,FREE TO BE FREE...

This concludes the HOULDEN Report for February 11,2018.So,Be smart,Be safe,Happy computing, and I will leave you with this phrase from the home computer club's almanac.
 "stay Hungry".
