The Houlden Report

Well This is definately hitting the bigtime for me.I finally Made it to the big time in writing. It went from a MySpace Profile Blog to the big time Blogger network.I am still converting (and toying around with) Linux/Ubuntu,Kubuntu,Mythubuntu,XUbuntu and a few other distros. It seems that all versions dual boot with Microsoft Window$ XP.I also made XP look and feel like Windows 98SE.. Using the XP home upgrade and a few changes. Felt Odd,however,it is Fun.
The news that the Battle between Microsoft and Linux started way back in 1990. Before windows, there was DOS and UNIX. It is fascinatingly brilliant that a distro of Linux is more popular then the recent release of WINDOW$ (Vista). The initial Beginning of this "Battle Royale" for me began in 1986 under GEOWORKS ENSEMBLE and Apple OS 7.1.4 .Seems a bit odd,eh? That software did exist.
Two weeks ago,Microsoft Buried "Old Faithful" Windows 3.1 because of the historical value.Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11 for workgroups started the whole computer madness.I still have my software (in Mint) and do on occasion, use them for old times sake. However, while I was reading ZDNet and Leo LaPorte's Bloggs,That's when it hit me.They Killed off My old dear friend Windows 3.1 and then buried it.I even still own the Windows 95 upgrade for Windows 3.1 even though it is old.. That version was the FLOPPY version of Windows 95 before CDs were the standard.I also heard that Floppy disks and drives are no longer available.Another Piece of history is gone.
Tape drives were a novelty because they would always break and you would loose your DATA.We also cannot forget Radio Shack's Jump into the computer market, called the TRS-80. There still is a computer community that only works with the Famous TRS-80. I was shocked!I enjoyed my first PC which was an IBM XT-8080 with GEOWORKS (pre-windows).. The collection I have of old PCs go way back.I own two of the old Pacific Bell machines and one offmake that was sold through heathkit. And the first Computer I have rebuilt/repaired was my mom's old 1991 COMPUDAT tower which ran Windows 3.1 at 20MHZ bus speed.. I have also owned a few Zenith machines and I own an IBM thinkpad 600 which is running Windows XP/Xubuntu,a 1995 GATEWAY 2000 colorbook running Windows NT 3.0,and then I own a Custom tower with a P4 processor,3 hard drives,a DVD burner and a high powered power supply and a video card with 512MB on the board and 4gig of Ram.. And then I own a DELL INSPIRON 5000 running Windows XP and Ubuntu dual boot.. That is the machine that I am typing this blog on... I rebuilt / built them all.. I Love what i do...
So, The Dis-satisfaction from Windows Vista rages onward, people are flocking to get off windows permanently. The Masses of people are ever so growing that wish to leave Microsoft and their Money-Hungry bastians to go to a OS (Operating System) where they do not have to report back to the manufacturer for anything and.... You own the software because the software is free..
Well, this ends the first of many Blogs here and that's the news from Mike's Tech Corner.. see you later................. Mike Houlden
